How Are Disposable Medical Masks Made?

- Sep 25, 2020-

If you cut the mask apart, you can see that there are at least 3 layers, two layers of non-woven fabric on the outside, and filter paper in the middle.

There are production regulations for this number of layers, at least three layers.

We look at the inferior masks that are exposed on the market and use only one layer of non-woven fabric, which is a serious cut corner by unscrupulous manufacturers...

What is "non-woven fabric"

"Non-woven fabric" (also called "non-woven fabric") is named because of the manufacturing process, and this kind of fabric is not woven.

All kinds of clothes we often wear, cotton, linen, and silk are always formed by weaving a little bit of weft, weft and warp on the machine. For example, let’s look at a "lace mesh, which is made by weaving."

The hole card system allows the machine to repeatedly weave the same pattern without going wrong, and the beautiful lace pattern gradually takes shape.

And "non-woven fabric" is similar to the needle-punching method we use to make felt, without weaving.

It is to use N needles to brush and brush continuously to make the cotton structure tangled and solidify, and then process it into such a flat cloth.

This is not precious material. Most of the "environmental protection bags" that grandparents go to participate in health activities for the elderly are made of "non-woven fabrics."

So why are masks still in short supply after so many days?

Because the market is in short supply...As a one-time consumable, billions of people across the country want to have a few people every day.

Suddenly explosive demand, coupled with the tight supply of raw materials, the major manufacturing countries resume work urgently, rushing to work day and night, and the supply is not available for a while...

Merge three layers

Such three-layer non-woven fabric materials are stacked together through a production machine like the one shown below.

Have you noticed the small speaker in the upper left corner of this machine? There is a string of wires passing through the bell mouth and sending it in.

Sew into the nose clip

This depends on the second structure of the mask: the bendable metal wire on the upper part of the mask.

When wearing, pinch the nose clip to fix it to the bridge of the nose, so that the mask will be tightly worn.

Otherwise, if there is no such structure, the air leakage of my collapsed nose is more serious, and the sealing is not tight, which affects the protective effect...

Let's look at a close-up, which is to match and convey the metal wire along one side of the non-woven fabric, then the structure in the figure below is rolled up, and then stitched at the back, and it is done.

Stacked part

The main part of the mask is the layered structure shown in the figure below. When you pull it open, it completely covers your mouth and nose, and you are not afraid of a big face.

The section of the laminated structure is so long that a machine folding link is required.

Set the small bevel angle so that large sheets of non-woven fabric will gradually narrow from left to right to form a "folded structure" along these bevels.

Then there is a pressing link to flatten the surface of the mask.

Judgment link

Most of the individual cutting and seaming of masks are processed automatically and without manual labor.

And different masks have slight manufacturing differences, some are seamed, and some are directly hot-pressed and glued, with small details.

What comes out is a single mask body. It's not over yet, there are still several steps ahead.

Filling and pressing

After one side is wrapped, immediately flatten and bond.

The masks that came out at this time, which had been cut, were once again connected together. This is really a passionate and empty hate since ancient times. This hate will last forever...

So there is still a need to cut and reinforce the edges, one cut...

Hot pressing fixed ear rope

Adhesive is also needed on the edge of the mask. As shown in the figure below, the mechanical claws here send the ear straps, and the adhesive underneath is used to fix the ear straps to the mask.

In this way, a flat mask is finished.
