Why Do New Masks Smell Bad?

- May 28, 2022-

There are many reasons for the odor of masks: 1. The quality of non-woven fabrics. Non-woven fabrics are formed by drawing polypropylene pellets or powders. Polypropylene itself is non-toxic and tasteless, and its raw material is polypropylene pellets, which may have a peculiar smell due to self-degradation and the use of additives in the production process. In addition, in the process of mask production, lace processing, and other processes, the high temperature of ultrasonic welding, produces odorous aldehydes, ketones, and other substances. When buying a mask, open the package and smell it to see if there is any odor. Because the odor is related to the quality of raw materials, it is recommended to choose a regular brand.

2. Some of the laces are made of rubber, which retains the smell of rubber. This odor can be reduced over time, no need to worry.

3. Ethylene oxide disinfection. In order to meet the bacteriological indicators in the quality requirements of some types of masks, ethylene oxide is required for disinfection. After disinfection, if the ethylene oxide is not completely released, there will be a peculiar smell, which is harmful to the human body. When using, open the package and place it in a clean, dry, and ventilated place for more than 24 hours until there is no obvious odor.

4. Corruption or mildew. When the mask is worn, the protein, fat, and moisture in the exhaled breath can grow rapidly under suitable temperature and humidity, and release odor. At this time, in addition to the smell, there are often changes such as discoloration. It should be discarded and replaced with a new mask.
